Annie Kenney's Birth Certificate
Description
An account of the resource
Annie Kenney was born on 13 September 1879 in Springhead, Saddleworth. She was the fifth of the 12 children of Horatio Nelson Kenney and Ann Wood, and their fourth daughter. Her father’s occupation is registered as a Cotton minder. Annie herself starts work in a cotton mill at the age of 10, in 1889. In 1905, she joins the Suffragette movement to become one of its most significant contributors. The document also shows the mark put by her mother, instead of a signature, authorised by the Registrar. Annie's own access to (institutional) education was very limited, but she persisted in her thirst for knowledge and dedicated her limited free time to learning and writing.
