Public Event: Suffragette Stories: Transcribing History
Suffragette Stories: Transcribing History
As part of Heritage Open Days at The Forum in Norwich
On 15 September 2018, we delivered a hands on heritage event to raise awareness of the Kenney Archive and to encourage members of the community to engage in activities to contribute to our project. Participants were invited to get involved in two taster activities:
Transcribing handwritten letters from Christabel Pankhurst to Annie Kenney, including one celebrating an anniversary of the first militant act in the suffrage movement, triggered by Annie Kenney on 13 October at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester
Creative writing, inspired by the archive. A graduate of the Masters in Creative Writing at UEA, Yin Lim, led a creative writing workshop, encouraging the audience to attempt their own storywriting, inspired by photographs from the archive.
Participants were also encouraged to continue their involvement with the project, either by submitting their stories to the Suffragette Stories anthology or by volunteering to transcribe more letters in the archive. We were delighted at the response and will be working with those volunteers and story writers in the coming months.
