Description
An account of the resource
Portrait of Mary Blathwayt with her brother, William, and her mother, Mrs. Linley Blathwayt, outside their family home in Batheaston in September 1929.
The Blathwayt family grew close to Annie Kenney as Mary took on a central role with the WSPU, continuing this relationship even after the schism in 1911-1912 as the Blathwayts encouraged women who visited their home to turn away from violence. Across from their home, Eagle House, was the site of Annie's Arboretum, a plantation where suffragettes planted trees. The family cared for the plantation for over 50 years until Mary's death, at which time the land was sold and the trees torn up to build a housing estate.

Rowland Kenney (1882-1961) was the seventh son of Horatio Nelson Kenney and Ann Woolf. Rowland started work in the cotton mills, like his sisters; work which he loathed. Influenced by Robert Blatchford’s writing in the Clarion, the famous socialist newspaper published weekly between 1891 and 1934, he moved to London and achieved success as a journalist. He got involved with the emerging Independent Labour Party and in 1910 managed the Publications Department of the Socialist Review. In 1912, he became the first editor of the Daily Herald. He joined the British Department of Information during WWI, which sent him to the British Legation in Norway as a press officer. During WWII, he returned to Norway as Press Attaché and Intelligence Officer.

This is a review of Rowland’s autobiography Westering, published in The Spectator. The reviewer, H. W. H., emphasises Rowland’s far from traditional rise through the ranks and praises his work as an “engrossing story”. The text of the review references a section of the memoir entitled 'Bondage', which refers to Rowland’s civil service career and emphasises his socialist commitments. “Rebel though he may be at heart,” H. W. H. writes, “Mr Kenney keeps the heart well controlled by the head, and his political judgements are sincere and sound.”

After the end of WWI, Jessie Kenney (1887-1985) decided to train as a Marine Radio Officer. This photo captures her during her course at the Marconi School. She received her Certificate of Proficiency in Radiotelegraphy in 1923, but was not allowed to put her skills to active work due to her gender. Instead she worked as a stewardess on around-the-world cruises during the 1920s and 1930s, including for the Furness and Orient Lines.
The caption on the back reads: ‘Jessie Kenney. 25/05/1994

Description
An account of the resource
Commemorative plaque unveiled in Manchester Free Trade Hall in 1960 to honour Christabel Pankhurst and Annie Kenney for their contribution to the suffragette movement.
The tablet reads: “At an election meeting in the Old Free Trade Hall on October 13th 1905 Christabel Pankhurst of this city and Annie Kenney of Saddleworth asked whether the incoming Liberal government would give votes to women. Thrown out without answer they continued their protest outside, were arrested, and imprisoned in Strangeways Gaol. Thus was born the Suffragette Campaign which was crowned with victory in 1918.”

Description
An account of the resource
Mary Higginson holding the "Votes for Women" banner
Mary was one of the retired suffragettes who attended the unveiling of the commemorative plaque dedicated to Christabel Pankhurst and Annie Kenney in Manchester Free Trade Hall in May 1960 and the first militant act on 13 October 1905. She is pictured here holding the same ‘Votes for Women’ banner Annie unfurled on that momentous day. We do not know much about Mary’s life, but in the Kenney Papers, she appears on this photograph and in the Suffragette Roll of Honour of Prisoners, 1905-1914.

Description
An account of the resource
This is a 1933 photograph of Annie Kenney, her husband James 'Jim' Taylor (1874-1977), and her sister Nell Kenney outside Annie and Jim's family home in Letchworth. Annie and Jim married in 1920 after Annie stepped away from politics and moved to Letchworth in 1923. They remained together until her death in 1953.
James Taylor was born in St Pancras, the son of a solicitor's clerk. Between 1907 and 1914 he worked for various employers chiefly as a metalworker or pipe-fitter. In 1914 he enlisted in the King's Royal Rifles and in 1916 was dispatched to the Royal Navy Torpedo Factory, Greenock, where he met Annie and worked until end of the war. He made a career of teaching handicraft and rose to become a Manager of the Government's Training Centre in Letchworth. He retired in 1958 and embarked on a tour around Europe by moped.
