Student Discovery Workshop
Hand out notebooks
Advise Students they will not have to share anything in their notebooks unless they want to, but
they should bring them to each session.
Group discussion: Why is it important to remember the past?
Ask Students to open their notebooks and write what they would like to be remembered for.
Why is it important to remember the past? Ask students to answer the question, writing an answer
on a sheet of paper (anonymous if preferred), take answers and explain these will be used at end of
project.
Explain we will be using historical fiction in this project.
What is fiction – something imaginary?
What is history – something true?
How do they work together?
This project will use our imaginations to try to feel the past.
There won’t be any tests on dates or facts, but we would like everyone involved to write something
imaginative about the past, imagining how it felt like for the people involved.
We will be using the story of the Suffragettes to do this.

Exercise 1: Aspiration (20 mins)
Enough about us! Ask Students to introduce themselves, tell us their name, their favourite subjects
and any career aspirations.
Take a note as they do this.
Put the clock back to 1905 [Write on pad it’s 11 June 1905]. Ask the Students to stand up.
Going round the room, ask female students to sit down if they either couldn’t study or follow that
profession in 1905.
Ask boys to sit down, go back to 2018 and ask students to start a new page and write one word in
their note book how they felt standing up, or sitting down.

Ask anyone if they would like to share any thoughts.

Background information and prompts for volunteers
The 1900s were a period of educational change – with a number of education reforms. In 1914,
there were 349 girls schools and 237 mixed secondary schools (government grant schools)
Girls were ‘almost entirely middle class’, however most middle class girls would still have been
educated at home.
Curricula were mixed, but progressive (denominational) schools might have taught girls: Latin,
some maths, history, geography and modern languages, but not often science]
In 1910, 20% of university students were female (so some of the girls in your room might be
able to go to university)
In 1900s women had the following career choices: domestic service, factory work, teaching,
nursing, some modest clerical positions (as long as they did not compete with men)
Entrepreneurial and professional roles were, with a very few exceptions, exclusively male).
Women were receiving more education, but it was not intended to prepare them for work, it
was more for domestic purposes and voluntary social work.
Exercise 2: Exclusion (20 mins)
Divide students into As and Bs and pair them in twos. Try to achieve gender balance between two
groups. Ask As to block out their hearing and tell them that their aim will be to find out as much
about the B person as they can. Then ask Bs to be as uncommunicative and disengaged as they can
Give them 1-2 minutes for A to discover as much about B as possible.
Ask a pair to enact their scenario to whole group. When they have finished, ask Students to write in
their notebook how it felt being A or B. Hold discussion about who in the scenario should wear the
suffragrette sash? Who would the other person be? On what occasions would a suffragette behave
as person A/B. Would they ever feel like the other person?

Introduction to the Suffragettes (10 mins)
Using PP, introduce Annie and Jessie and their archive.
Using PP, take the class back to 13th of October 1905.
Writing Exercise: Ask Students to write in their notebook the thoughts of one of the following:
Annie, Christabel, Winston Churchill, a member of the audience (male), a member of the audience
(female), policeman.
How does that compare with how they felt after the first exercise (sitting/standing)?
Using PP, introduce Eagle House and Annie’s Arboretum. Hand out facsimiles of trees.
Ask them to imagine how those trees planted in the 1900s look now…
Final slide: Trees were destroyed. Those Suffragettes were forgotten.

Exercise 3: Outsiders and Insiders (30 mins)
Divide students into 3 groups, each with a volunteer and share the facsimile material with them –
divide trees so each group has a few to look at. Give students 10 minutes to familiarise themselves
with the documents, answering questions.
Exercises relating to documents
The purpose of this exercise is for the students a) to think about what it means to be both an
outsider and an insider b) observe an object closely. Encourage them to observe the documents

closely, giving them a little bit of context (on back of docs), choose a document and write in their
notebooks.

Background information and prompts for Volunteers
Passports
The passports record a period when both Annie and Jessie were travelling abroad as
representatives of the British Government. They were insiders. A passport is a symbol of
freedom.
Compare this with their recent pasts, in prison. They were outsiders.
Ask the students to observe the objects. How would it feel to touch them? What stamps can
they notice? What would it have meant to Annie and Jessie to have a passport and travel
abroad? How would they have felt being on government business? Why did they keep these
passports?
Ask them to write in their notebooks answering one of these questions.
Explore more widely the question of nationality and gender. 1870 legislation provided for
the first time that British women who married foreign men should lose their British
nationality. This was a radical break from the common law doctrine that citizenship could
not be removed, renounced, or revoked. The law was in place until 1933.
How would it have felt for a woman to have her passport taken off her? To have no
nationality?
Ask them to write in their notebooks imagining this moment.
Extract from a Question from Lord Danesfort to the House of Lords in 1924.
The noble Lord said: My Lords, I rise to ask the Question and to move the
Resolution which stand in my name. My object in doing so is to call attention to
the serious hardships to which British-born women who marry United States
citizens are subjected at the present time owing to the existing law in this
country and the United States. The position is this. By the British law a British
woman who marries an alien ceases to be a British subject and becomes an alien.
By the United States law, known as the Cable Law, which was passed in 1922, a
United States citizen who marries an alien woman does not, by the act of
marriage, enable her to take his nationality. On the contrary, she remains an
alien according to the United States law. Therefore, it comes to this: that a
British woman who marries a United States citizen becomes an alien by the law
of this country and she remains an alien from the United States point of view by
the law of the United States.

Badges and local history
The suffrage and anti-suffrage league badges allow you to explore who would have worn
these badges in the context of insiders/outsiders. Explain what anti-suffrage means. Show

There is some local history associated with Cromer.
Ethel Williams, local Suffragette
•

Ethel Williams was born in Cromer in 1863. She went to Norwich High School and
Newnham College Cambridge.

•

She graduated from the London School of Medicine for Women in 1891, "but had to
gain her hospital experience abroad in Paris and Vienna due to prejudice against
women training in British hospitals."

•

Ethel was an active member of the National Union of Woman's Suffrage Societies
(also known as the NUWSS).

•

In 1906 Ethel became the first woman to found a general medical practice in
Newcastle, and she was reportedly the first woman to drive a car in the North of
England. Ethel died in 1948.

Lord Cromer, President of the Anti-Suffrage League
•

•

•

•

•

Evelyn Baring, later Lord Cromer was born in Cromer in 1848. He went to Boarding
school at the age of 7 and Royal Military Academy at 14, joining the Army when he
was 17.
After postings to Greece and India, he left the army at the age of 35 and became a
colonial administrator, posted to Egypt. He came to believe only the firm, direct
guidance of a British colonial government could bring order and prosperity and that
“native” rulers were hopelessly corrupt and oppressive.
He became British Consul-general in Egypt establishing a principle whereby British
officials could dismiss Egyptian ministers who did not obey British directives. In 1901,
he was created Earl Cromer.
In 1902 he was given an honorary doctorate from Oxford University and in 1906 he
was given the Order of Merit. The same year he was embroiled in the Denshawi
incident, when British soldiers doled out excessively severe punishments to
Egyptians. Cromer resigned and was given £50,000 by Parliament for his “eminent
services” in Egypt.
He was a founder member of the Men’s League for Opposing women’s Suffrage and
became its President in 1908. When this merged with the Women’s League, he was
President of the new organisation until 1912. Evelyn died in 1917.

Images of Eleanor Higginson holding votes for Women banner, unveiling of Free Hall plaque,
Jessie and Cynthia and Christabel and Annie and Christabel’s letters of the 1940s.
Explore these women’s journeys as Outsider/Insider. How they felt watching the plaque
being unveiled in the place where they had raised the banner in 1905. Think about our
conception of old women and these women’s radical and conservative behaviour.
Contrast the materials/look and feel of the banner and memorial stone. Compare with the
fragility of the trees.

Give the 3 groups an opportunity to discuss what they have discovered with wider group.

Exercise 4: Treading in someone else’s shoes ( 20 mins)
In plenary, introduce tree suffragettes. Give each student an envelope containing a short biography
of a suffragette who lost a tree (see annex A).
Using what they have found, ask Students to sketch out ideas for a story in their notebooks, using
their suffragette as inspiration.
After 5-7 minutes, disrupt groups with playing cards. Each takes 2 cards.
Diamonds = rich person, the higher the diamond the richer the person.
Spades = a figure of authority, policeman, judge, MP. The higher the spade, the more important the
person.
Clubs = a person who unhappy with their lot but scared of change so puts up with things.
Hearts = a person who is very passionate, engaged and committed to a cause
Give each student 2 cards and ask them to incorporate into story.
After 5 minutes, stop everyone from writing.

Close (10 mins)
Encourage them to keep jotting ideas in their books and carrying out any research on their
suffragettes

Vera Louise ‘Jack’ Holme (1881-1969)

Tree: Ilex Aquifolum, 9 May 1910.
Wikipedia entry: Yes
Vera was born in Birkdale, Lancashire the daughter of a timber merchant. She had a
brother, Gordon, who would later name his children after her, a daughter ‘Vera’ and a
son ‘Jack’. She became a chorus girl at the Savoy Theatre, London. She was a talented
violinist and singer and performed in a selection of Gilbert and Sullivan operas in 1906 7, where she asked Gilbert to inscribe her copies of the score, Gilbert obliged with lines
from Patience, including:
“Sad is that woman’s lot who, year by year,
Sees, one by one her beauties disappear!”
Vera worked for Gilbert at the Savoy again from 1908 to March 1909, with a contract as
a contralto chorister paying her a weekly wage of £2.4 and it was during this time she
joined a number of actresses (including Ellen Terry, Sybil Thorndike, Lily Langtry) to
form the Actresses’ Franchise League (AFL).
Vera joined the WSPU in 1908. Sylvia Pankhurst described her as “a noisy and explosive
young person, frequently rebuked by her elders for lack of dignity.” In 1909, with Elsie
Howey, she hid in a large pipe organ at Coulston Hall in Bristol to disrupt a political
meeting by calling ‘Votes for Women from their hiding place. Generally hilarity ensued
for the next seven minutes as the meeting’s stewards searched for the source of the
disembodied voice. A few days later, Vera wrote an account of this in Votes for Women
as a musical parody.
…Our voices rang out from the twilight,

But nowhere could we be found;
They looked from the floor to the ceiling—
Then stewards came searching round.
In 1909, Vera was appointed chauffer to Emmeline Pankhurst and appeared as Hannah
Snell, the woman who went to war disguised as a soldier, in A Pageant of Great Women,
by Cicely Hamilton.

She was arrested at least three times. In 1911, she began a relationship with fellow
suffragette Eveline Haverfield who founded the Women’s Emergency Corps after the
outbreak of WWII. Vera was commissioned a major in the Corps and in 1915 was sent to
Serbia where she was in charge of horses and trucks for the Scottish Women’s Hospital
units there. In 1917, she returned to London to deliver a report on the situation of the
Serbian Army to Lord Derby, the Secretary of War. She remained close to the Serbian
people after the war, as administrator for the Haverfield Fund for Serbian Children, and
revisited the country in 1934.
Following Eveline’s death in 1920, Vera spent a lot of time with Edith Craig, Clare
Atwood and Christabel Marshall, who had formed a permanent ménage à trois at their
home at The Priest's House, Tenterden. Other visitors included Radclyffe Hall, Una
Troubridge, Vita Sackville West and Virginia Woolf. Vera eventually settled in Scotland,
near Kirkcudbright in an artistic community.
She was an acting member of the Pioneer Players from 1914 to 1915 and again from
1917 to 1920. For many years Vera helped stage the annual Ellen Terry memorial
performances in Kent. She died in Glasgow on January 1, 1969.
Her papers, including her diary, are held at the Women’s Library at the LSE, who
published this blog about her. http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/lsehistory/2017/03/15/vera-jackholme-one-of-the-stars-of-the-womens-library-collection/

Creative Writing Workshop
Welcome (10 minutes)
Reflect on issues of women’s experiences over the last century.
Prompts:
•
•
•
•
•

Injustice
Opportunity
Trapped in a role
Finding a voice that is heard
Forgotten legacy (tree)

Lesson Plan for Creative writing
Part 1: Finding a story (15 mins)
Exercise One: Silent brainstorming on what has stuck with them over last two sessions. Might be an
image; something from the suffragettes; something from the library customers. Remind children of
themes of injustice, being an outsider, lack of opportunity, trapped in a role, finding a voice.
Ask them to jot down at least one idea
After 5 minutes, discuss these ideas.
Prompts if they are short on inspiration:
Cat and Mouse Act– Imagine you are a suffragette in hiding from the Cat and Mouse Act and you
travel to your local town – who would you meet, what would you do?
Imagine women had never won the vote, write a story about what 2018 might look like.
Imagine women lost the vote now, what would 2028 look like?

Part 2: Writing the start. Explain an Inciting Incident. Ask them to think of an inciting incident and
start their story (10 minutes writing time)
(15 minutes)

Part 3: Characterisation (40 mins)

Explain PoV. How critical this is to people believing a work of fiction.
Exercise: Your local High Street
Ask students to imagine they are Sherlock Holmes walking down your High Street and write down
everything they see. Give them 5 minutes.
After 5 minutes, compile a group list of what Sherlock sees/smells/hears
Then ask them to imagine they are Suffragette (use print outs of bios found on the website here)
walking down Cromer High Street. Give them three minutes to write down what they can
see/smell/hear.
Start by going through the Sherlock List – would the suffragette notice any of these things?
Add any suffragette specific viewpoints.
Explain this is point of view (PoV). Ask them to think about their character, what would they notice
about the environment where the story unfolds?
10 minutes writing time to focus on character.

Part 4: Dialogue (15 minutes)
Interrupt writing to give each student a playing card.
Spade is a figure of authority, Lord/Judge/Mayor/Policeman – higher the card the more important
the person
Club is someone who is sympathetic, friendly, wants to be liked, but a bit timid – higher the card the
friendlier the person.
Diamond is someone wealthy and influential, Shopkeeper/Factory Owner/Captain of Industry –
higher the card, the more wealthy and influential
Heart is someone passionate and committed – higher the card, the more passionate the person.
Or – give them a suffragette bio and ask them to introduce this character.
Explain how dialogue, opposing characters, drives a story.
Leave the children to write for 10 minutes

Part 5: The end (10 minutes)
Talk about the end of a story/an arc. Discuss with your group what their endings might be.

The Blathwayt family grew close to Annie Kenney as Mary took on a central role with the WSPU, continuing this relationship even after the schism in 1911-1912 as the Blathwayts encouraged women who visited their home to turn away from violence. Across from their home, Eagle House, was the site of Annie's Arboretum, a plantation where suffragettes planted trees. The family cared for the plantation for over 50 years until Mary's death, at which time the land was sold and the trees torn up to build a housing estate.</text>

Pinned into a card for the International Women's Franchise Club is part of a ribbon or banner held by Emily Wilding Davison on May 25th, 1913. Emily was a member of the WSPU and millitant fighter for the cause, but is mostly remembered for her death. She was trampled by King George V's horse at the 1913 Derby in a failed attempt to pin a suffragette badge onto the horse. Her death marked a culmination and a turning point of the militant campaign.</text>
