Celluloid photo button badge of Emmeline Pankhurst. Badges bearing portraits of Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst and Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence were mass produced by the Women's Social and Political Union. Sold to supporters for one penny, they raised funds for the campaign 'war chest' and enhanced the public profile of the suffragette leaders.

My darling old Jessie

I am so very sorry about the news your letter brings but I hope you are better by now.

The weather here is damp and horrid – only one gleam of sun (reported in the Daily Mail) has visited us so far.

But the Smethwick [people’s friendliness] seems

[Page 2]

to make up for it.

You can imagine what work it has been to get the organisation side going. 3000 absent voters to

[Page 3]

the fruits of all this [illegible] work.

The [happiest] band is the [Meetings] Department.

Miss [illegible] and Maguire and Co [Company]. They are on familiar ground so far as the work is concerned and they are doing it well.

My final meeting was last night

[Page 4]

and was most encouraging. No Unionist opposition and the only Labour opposition came from measly Bolsheviks and very few at that.

But of course meetings are not the final test and we act accordingly.

I have written to Dr. S[-----] asking if it is really impossible to get the stuff mother

Bu[---] and dry [“dry” underlined twice] weather, for dampness is the worst thing for your troubles.

I have some hope

[Page 6]

that Dr. [illegible].S. will rise to the occasion as the one thing needed on this job is plenty of “push and go”.

An account of the resource
[Transcription is available below] Letter from Christabel Pankhurst to Jessie Kenney from 29 November 1918.
Christabel writes to Jessie from the Smethwick election campaign, where Christabel was running to become an MP during the first General Election in which women had the right to vote as well as to stand as MP candidates. She writes about the horrid weather and her busy campaign life: “You can imagine what work it has been to get the organisation side going. 3000 absent voters to circula[rise]. committee [loans], hard to get [through] the political views of their landlords etc. etc.” Christabel also reports that Cynthia Maguire and other retired suffragettes were putting their organising skills to work again and doing well. She mentions that her final election meeting had taken place the night before and she found it “most encouraging.” Very few of her political opponents made objections, she tells Jessie, “No Unionist [Irish Unionist] opposition and the only Labour opposition came from measly Bolsheviks and very few at that.”

Flora Drummond and David Lloyd George with munitions workers, 1918
Description
An account of the resource
Prime Minister Lloyd George (1863-1945) and suffragette leader Flora Drummond (1878-1949) greet women munition factory workers in Manchester in September 1918. Drummond, an organiser for the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), was imprisoned nine times for her activism. She earned her nickname, the General, for her habit of wearing a military style uniform and riding on a large horse during suffragette marches and demonstrations. The WSPU, led by Christabel and Emmeline Pankhurst, were ardent supporters of the British war effort during WWI (1914-1918) and ceased all militant action in 1914 to help with the war effort. They were instrumental in organising the work of women in the munition factories (and other manufacture industries important for the war effort such as textile) through their activist networks. They were criticised by labour and union organisers for suppressing campaigns (including strike action) for improving the working conditions and pay of factory women, who received a fraction of the wages of their male counterparts.

"National League for Opposing Woman-Suffrage" Badge
Description
An account of the resource
Badge produced by National League for Opposing Woman-Suffrage. The NLOWS was founded in 1910 in London, after the merger of the Women’s National Anti-Suffrage League and the Men’s League for Opposing Woman Suffrage, to oppose granting voting rights to women in the UK. Reasons given for this opposition included: doubts women would be able to make sound political decisions due to their emotional nature, fears that if women became involved in politics, they would stop having children and the human race would die out, claims that women were already represented by their husbands, and so on. The organisation ceased to exist after the 1918 Representation of the People Act.
