Description
An account of the resource
This is a Programme for old song and folk speech recital concert featuring Reginald ‘Reg’ Kenney (1873-1954), held on 17 October 1912. Singing was a talent that distinguished him among the variously gifted Kenney siblings. He was the eldest child of Horatio Nelson Kenney and Ann Wood and Annie and Jessie’s oldest brother. He started his life working in the cotton mills, like his sisters, and became a representative for a firm of wholesale booksellers later on. He had a profound influence on his younger brothers and sisters and influenced their political sensibilities and interest in social welfare.

An account of the resource

Rowland Kenney (1882-1961) was the seventh son of Horatio Nelson Kenney and Ann Woolf. Rowland started work in the cotton mills, like his sisters; work which he loathed. Influenced by Robert Blatchford’s writing in the Clarion, the famous socialist newspaper published weekly between 1891 and 1934, he moved to London and achieved success as a journalist. He got involved with the emerging Independent Labour Party and in 1910 managed the Publications Department of the Socialist Review. In 1912, he became the first editor of the Daily Herald. He joined the British Department of Information during WWI, which sent him to the British Legation in Norway as a press officer. During WWII, he returned to Norway as Press Attaché and Intelligence Officer.

This is a review of Rowland’s autobiography Westering, published in The Spectator. The reviewer, H. W. H., emphasises Rowland’s far from traditional rise through the ranks and praises his work as an “engrossing story”. The text of the review references a section of the memoir entitled 'Bondage', which refers to Rowland’s civil service career and emphasises his socialist commitments. “Rebel though he may be at heart,” H. W. H. writes, “Mr Kenney keeps the heart well controlled by the head, and his political judgements are sincere and sound.”

Excerpt from Jessie Kenney's unpublished autobiography #4

Description
An account of the resource
Excerpt from Jessie Kenney’s unpublished autobiography, “The Flame and the Flood”.
In this excerpt, Jessie recollects the peaceful family Sundays of her childhood. Discussions ranged from articles in the latest issue of The Clarion to opera and reincarnation. The afternoons would be passed in conversation until the church bells announced the Evening Service, which the family would attend. After church, the older siblings would go out for the evening whereas the youngest would stay home and play board games with their mother. Their father would usually be near by reading a newspaper or an herbal book, as he was fond of botany. Jessie fondly recalls being taught to play a good game of draughts by her mother. “Little did I realise then,” she writes, “that it would be a symbol of a broad arrowhead that would become one day not only a badge of shame and ridicule stamped on the clothes of prisoners in the gaols of our country but would evolve into a symbol of the pioneer which have to pierce through ignorance on one side, prejudice on the other and with its point cut through apathy and inertia”. She refers here to the famous arrowhead pikes suffragettes carried during marches and demonstrations to signal that they had been imprisoned for the Cause.

Description
An account of the resource
This is a 1933 photograph of Annie Kenney, her husband James 'Jim' Taylor (1874-1977), and her sister Nell Kenney outside Annie and Jim's family home in Letchworth. Annie and Jim married in 1920 after Annie stepped away from politics and moved to Letchworth in 1923. They remained together until her death in 1953.
James Taylor was born in St Pancras, the son of a solicitor's clerk. Between 1907 and 1914 he worked for various employers chiefly as a metalworker or pipe-fitter. In 1914 he enlisted in the King's Royal Rifles and in 1916 was dispatched to the Royal Navy Torpedo Factory, Greenock, where he met Annie and worked until end of the war. He made a career of teaching handicraft and rose to become a Manager of the Government's Training Centre in Letchworth. He retired in 1958 and embarked on a tour around Europe by moped.

Description
An account of the resource
Excerpt from Jessie Kenney’s unpublished autobiography, “The Flame and the Flood”.
In this excerpt, Jessie shares memories and anecdotes about Annie. This includes Annie’s “heart trouble”, which meant that she would very quickly cry or sob when she felt hurt or troubled. Annie’s easily shed tears went against the Lancashire custom to cry only when someone dies.
Annie was also a rebel in the fashion department, as she “could not bear a thing tight around her wrists, her head, or her waist", which meant that she hardly ever wore her “stays”, a type of corset. She would say that she preferred “to be comfortable to being beautiful”. Jessie writes: “However m[y] sister Molly need not have troubled about her figure for many years to come, as the Suffragette Movement in its early days would strip the fat and flesh from her bones.” Despite this, Annie “loved fun and made friends wherever she went.”
