During the 1920s and 1930s, Jessie Kenney (1887-1985) worked for the Furness and Orient lines, travelling around the world. She kept these itinerary materials from an Orient Line journey to Australia. These included information pamphlets on stopover cities such as Colombo, Sri Lanka, as well as historical overviews and maps. Featured example is a pamphlet on the Suez Canal, Port Said and Cairo, Egypt. The descriptions are clearly aimed at European travellers and are often dismissive of native cultures such as the following related to Cairo: “Cairo, in fact, is now a modern Europeanised city, with the largest population Africa. The population is immensely varied and in itself affords an amusing study. Apart from the modern city there remains a large native quarter as intricate and as squalid as the native quarters of other African cities.”
Another featured item is a menu from the return leg of the journey, which took place from 24 November 1938 to 12 January 1939. The dinner service includes fillets of turbot, roast duckling, globe artichokes, and strawberry biscuit ice.
Also included are maps of the Suez Canal and Cairo.

Excerpt from Jessie Kenney’s unpublished autobiography, “The Flame and the Flood.”
In this excerpt, Jessie shares memories from her early childhood. “As a young girl I was a real Yorkist and the world to me consisted of ‘black and white’,” she writes. The “white” were her parents’ house (referred to as Whams House), the church, and the moors. Annie and Jessie loved the moors so dearly that Annie had her ashes scattered over them after her death. The “black” were the cotton factories in Lees, Springhead, and Oldham. She writes of the cotton mills as dark forces that “swallowed up” her older brothers and sisters.

After the end of WWI, Jessie Kenney (1887-1985) decided to train as a Marine Radio Officer. She received her First Class Certificate of Proficiency in Radiotelegraphy on 9 April 1923, but was not allowed to put her skills to active work due to her gender. Instead she worked as a stewardess on around-the-world cruises during the 1920s and 1930s, including for the Furness and Orient Lines.

Jessie Kenney’s tribute to Vera Wentworth of September 1957 recalls the life and achievements of her suffragette friend and colleague. “Vera was one of the early members of the WSPU [Women’s Social and Political Union] and a great worker for the Suffragette Movement,” Jessie writes. “From the moment that she volunteered to help there was nothing that she would not do. She gave out handball, chalked pavements, sold the paper at street corners, spoke at outdoor meetings, went to prison and was forcibly fed.” Jessie recalls their stay at Holloway Prison, where they played “follow my leader” and got in trouble. She also writes about Vera’s life outside the Movement, particularly her war work and writing.

Jessie Kenney article “Clapham has an Air,” published in the Evening News.
Jessie Kenney knew Clapham well from her time living in London. “There is a place in London where you can live among the philosophers. It is not in Soho, Chelsea, Hampstead, or in the precincts of the British Museum. It is in Clapham.” She comments on its unusual street names - “Aristotle-road,” “Voltaire-road,” “Plato-road,” and the like. She suggests that Clapham’s connection to philosophy may be due to the “Clapham Sect” - “four of whom have busts and monuments in Westminster Abbey.” She mentions William Wilberforce (1759-1833), leader of the abolitionist movement, and Samuel Pepys (1655-1669), the Elizabethan politician and diarist. She ends the article by looking at the daily habits of Clapham residents, including “the little grocer” who always finds time to talk to his customers. “There are many others [. . .]. Many of them may not have heard of Epictetus and might smile at the thought of anyone being called by the name of Pythagoras. But they are philosophers all the same.”

Penman Club review of Jessie Kenney’s short essays “The Moorland Mystery,” “a Librarian at Sea,” and “What We Can Learn from Biographies” by Clifton Moreton, returned on 12 July 1957.
Mr Moreton finds “The Moorland Mystery” “very good” in style although lacking in the nature of the subject matter. He lists Tit Bits, Weekend Mail, and Bolton Evening News as suitable publications for the material. “A Librarian at Sea” is praised as not requiring “any alteration of any kind” and judged suitable for The Trident and Everybody’s. Both essays have been digitised and are available in the “Work” Collection.

Prime Minister Lloyd George (1863-1945) and suffragette leader Flora Drummond (1878-1949) greet women munition factory workers in Manchester in September 1918. Drummond, an organiser for the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), was imprisoned nine times for her activism. She earned her nickname, the General, for her habit of wearing a military style uniform and riding on a large horse during suffragette marches and demonstrations. The WSPU, led by Christabel and Emmeline Pankhurst, were ardent supporters of the British war effort during WWI (1914-1918) and ceased all militant action in 1914 to help with the war effort. They were instrumental in organising the work of women in the munition factories (and other manufacture industries important for the war effort such as textile) through their activist networks. They were criticised by labour and union organisers for suppressing campaigns (including strike action) for improving the working conditions and pay of factory women, who received a fraction of the wages of their male counterparts.
