Description
An account of the resource
Annie Kenney was appointed as a WSPU Organiser for the South-West and was based in Bristol from 1907 to October 1911. During a 1907 visit to Plymouth, the editor of the Western Daily Mercury started a competition "Asquith or Annie Kenney?". Asquith was then Chancellor of the Exchequer (soon to be Prime Minister) and was opposed to women's suffrage. The result of the competition was announced in the paper as follows: "85 per cent of our lady contributors and full 97 per cent of our gentleman readers put their money on Annie Kenney without edging or hesitation. [ . . .] Annie Kenney fights with the impregnable fortress of justice. The strong forces are with her and victory is already in her hands".
