Description
In light of the negative reaction Annie Kenney and her family had received at the broadcast of the BBC radio play 'The Women’s Rebellion', for the production of which they were not consulted, the script of 'The Suffragette' was submitted to Annie for approval in advance. The play was fictional, but based on the life of Charlotte Marsh. Edits include: “When speaking of the WSPU [Women’s Social and Political Union] Jane should say ‘We’. We never used the word I”; “Atmosphere of Clement’s Inn not right. There was nothing barrack like about it - no regimentation of women like as in Women’s Services. Always a very happy and friendly atmosphere there”; and “the Movement was an essentially feminine one in dress and individuality. Women were never told how to dress - it was this difference in individuality expressing itself through dress, behaviour, class, etc. that made the Movement so interesting”.
